For the Love of Our Dogs < Back
I'll lend you for a little time a dog of mine, he said.
For you to love while he lives, and mourn for when he's dead.
It maybe six or seven years or maybe more than these, but will you, till I
call him back, take care of him for me?
He'll bring his charm to gladden you, and should his stay be brief, you'll
have his memories, as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return, but there are
lessons taught down there, I want this dog to learn.
I've looked this wide world over, in my search for teachers true, and from
the throngs that crowd life's lanes, I have selected you.
Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labour vain, nor hate me
when I come to call, and take him back again?
I fancied that I heard them say "Dear Lord, thy will be done", for all the
joy thy dog shall bring, for the risk of grief we'll run.
We'll shelter him with tenderness, we'll love him while we may, and for the
happiness we've known, forever grateful stay.
But should the angels call for him, we'll brave the bitter grief that comes,
and try to understand.

He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds;
my other ears that hear above the winds.
He is the part of me that can reach out into the sea.
He has told me a thousand times over that I am his reason for being;
by the way he rests against my leg;
by the way he thumps his tail at my smallest smile;
by the way he shows his hurt when I leave without taking him.
(I think it makes him sick with worry when he is not along to care for me.)
When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive.
When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile.
When I am happy, he is joy unbounded.
When I am a fool, he ignores it.
When I succeed, he brags.
Without him, I am only another man.
With him, I am all-powerful.
He is loyalty itself.
He has taught me the meaning of devotion.
With him, I know a secret comfort and a private peace.
He has brought me understanding where before I was ignorant.
His head on my knee can heal my human hurts.
His presence by my side is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things.
He has promised to wait for me... whenever... wherever - in case I need him.
And I expect I will - as I always have.
He is just my dog.

Things We Can Learn From Our Dog.. - Author Unknown
If you can start the day without caffeine,
If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,
If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,
If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,
If you can ignore a person's limited education and never correct him,
If you can resist treating a rich person better than a poor friend,
If you can conquer tension without medical help,
If you can relax without liquor,
If you can sleep without the aid of drugs . . . .
THEN YOU ARE PROBABLY THE FAMILY DOG!

One more dog - Author Unknown
One dog is no trouble and two are so funny
The third one is easy, the fourth one's a honey
The fifth is delightful, the sixth one's a breeze
You find you can live with a houseful with ease
So how 'bout another? would you really dare?
They're really quite easy, but oh lord, the hair!
With dogs on the sofa and dogs on the bed
And crates in the kitchen... no bother, you said!
They're really no trouble, their manners are great
What's just one more dog and one more little crate?
The sofa is hairy, the windows are crusty
The floor is all footprints, the furniture's dusty
The housekeeping suffers but what do you care?
Who minds a few nose prints and a little more hair?
So get a new dog, you can always find room
And a little more time for the dust cloth and broom
There's hardly a limit to the dogs you can add
The thought of a cutback sure makes you feel sad
Each one is special, so useful, so funny
The food bill grows larger, you owe the vet money
Your folks never visit, few friends come to stay
(except other dog folks who live the same way)
Your lawn has now died and our shrubs are dead, too
Your weekends are busy, you're off with your crew
There's dog food and vitamins, training and shots
and treats, beds and toys, which cost lots and lots.
Is it worth it, you wonder? Are you caught in a trap?
Then that favourite comes up and climbs in your lap.
His look says "you're special", and you know that you will
keep all of the critters, in spite of the bill.
Winter's a hassle, the dogs love it true,
They must have their walks, though you're numb and you're blue.
Late evening is awful, you scream and you shout
at dogs on the sofa who refuse to go out.
The dogs and the kids, the mess, and the thrills
The work and the worry, the pressure, the bills
The whole thing seems worth it, the dogs are your life
They're charming and funny and offset the strife
Your lifestyle has changed, things just won't be the same
Yes, those dogs are addictive, and so's the dog game!
