2011
BORDER COLLIE PUPPIES
ARE NOW AVAILABLE!
Sweep
and Rory's 2011 Litter has been born earlier than originally
planned! Rory lived up to his nickname of 'Romeo' and decided the
autumn season with his 'Juliet' was 'on', rather than waiting til
Springtime.! Consequently Sweep
and Rory’s latest puppies were born on
12th May and
we
have a wonderful range of colours and, of course, they are all fit and
healthy, as Sweep is a wonderful mother.
We
have 2 Black and White girls, 2 Red and White boys, and 1 Red and White
girl, 2 Blue Merle girls, and 1 Blue Merle boy.

Breeder
Background
I trained in England in 2006 as a Dog Listener, and now run a service
helping dog owners understand their dogs’ natural pack
instincts,
their thinking, decision-making and behaviour and so be able to resolve
undesirable behaviours, such as jumping up, excessive barking, or
fear-aggression.
So why do I breed? Especially when there are so many unwanted but
deserving dogs awaiting new homes at shelters. I believe there will
always be new owners who wish to purchase puppies of their chosen breed
from reputable breeders (not pet shops) and I am committed to
influencing the integration of Dog Listening principles into breeding,
with the aim of positively effecting puppy temperament in the longer
term.
My
breeding principles – Temperament
& Health
A few years ago I met Penny & Peter Harvie of Beath Border
Collies
on Kangaroo Island in South Australia. They are well-regarded,
professional Border Collie breeders and adopt Dog Listening principles
in the way they interact and supervise their pack of 9 breeding females
and 2 stud males. Their dogs are only kennelled during the hours of
darkness, and operate as a natural pack - but are respectful and bonded
with their human leaders. It is a joy to be able to see a large group
of dogs living naturally and contentedly in this way.
I obtained my female red & white Border Collie, Sweep, and my
male
blue merle Border Collie, Rory, from Beath Borders. Sweep and Rory have
had one litter to date – see Pups in the Photo Gallery below.
My pups are third generation raised with Dog Listening principles. The
4 grandparents were raised by Beath Borders, and the parents by me. All
6 adult dogs are happy, stress-free, calm dogs with excellent health
& temperaments.
The 4 grandparents have been DNA tested by Beath Borders and are all
clear of all the known genetically transferred diseases in Border
Collies. This means the parents, and my puppies, are also clear. There
is also no incidence or evidence of Hip Dysplasia, knee/shoulder/elbow
problems, or epilepsy. All information can be confirmed by relevant
documentation/certificates and Beath Borders’ Vet. I am also
always happy to provide my Vet as a Referee, who can attest to the
health of my dog;. their temperament and care. Additionally, I provide
a full money-back guarantee, should a puppy exhibit any genetic health
problems.
Additionally, all my dogs are fed on completely natural diets and our
Vet, Dr David Boersma of Sandy Bay (Hobart), specialises in homeopathic
medicine, so I aim for minimum drug intervention.
I seek to place my puppies in suitable homes, where the puppy and the
new owners will be happy, so I ask potential owners to provide me with
information to help in the matching process – please
see attached PDF file.
Information
about our puppies
Cost
is $1200 (Same for each
colour/gender). 50% deposit is payable when committing to a puppy.
Fully refundable if no suitable puppy available. Non-refundable if you
change your mind.
What
does cost cover? Your puppy will
be
vaccinated, micro-chipped, wormed, and have a full Vet check and health
report. You will also receive comprehensive Puppy Notes for settling-in
your new arrival, information on Dog Listening and Natural Feeding
principles, and a discount voucher towards de-sexing your dog (Hobart
only). Puppies will have had basic crate and lead training. Puppies are
very well socialised with children and a wide range of adults.
When
will puppies be available?
Puppies can go to their new homes between 8-10 weeks of age (not before
– they are still learning from their pack). Arrangements can
be
made on a case-by-case basis for puppies to stay with our pack until
they are slightly older (charges may apply). It is usual for puppies to
be picked up, but delivery arrangements can be made (at new
owner’s expense if considerable distance involved). I do not
export puppies overseas.
Puppies’
features – what
will puppies look like..? See Photo Gallery below and links above!
Colours
– Colours produced to date
include Red & White, Blue Merle, Black & White and
Black
&
White.
There are some Border Collie puppy features that are not clear when
they are very young, and will develop as they mature.
Ears
– My puppies may have fully
folded, half-folded or prick ears, as all these options are present in
their background. (See photo of parents/grandparents for examples of
all the possibilities!)
Coat
– The majority of our Puppies will have a
medium length coat. Occasionally we have one with a heavy
(long)
coat.
A
medium coat (such as their mother Sweep’s) is usually
pretty
low maintenance, but will still require occasional brushing and
washing, and regular checking for grass-seeds etc
A
heavy coat (such as their father Rory’s)
requires
maintenance
– 2-3 brushes per week and regular checking for
grass-seeds
etc. Regular
grooming, and washing after swimming or rolling in sand or mud, will be
needed. I have Rory regularly partly shaved (under legs) to assist with
ease of grooming, and to avoid felting or dreadlocks – this
works
very well and reduces grooming considerably.
Eye-colour
– although blue when
young, most puppies eyes will be brown. However, the blue-merles eyes
may well ‘match’ their coat or be in the range of
green/grey/blue.
Nose
colour – Most of the
puppies have black noses. However, the red puppies may well
have
liver-coloured noses. (This is because they have some chocolate colour
coated dogs in their breeding background). Liver coloured noses require
more care when the dog is regularly out in the summer sunshine
–
including specially formulated sunscreen. If not, they may develop
‘collie nose’ a form of skin cancer.
Adult
size – the comparative
size
of the puppies in the litter is not necessarily an indication of their
adult size. The smallest one on the litter may ‘catch
up’
and be an average build. The big robust puppy may well also average out
as well. Males as adults are on average a couple of inches taller and
5+kilos heavier than the females. The majority of our dogs
become
small to medium size Border Collies.
Personality
– From the time my
pups are about 3 weeks of age I am able to develop an understanding of
their basic personalities. A lot has been written about
“assessing” puppy temperaments, much of which I
don’t
agree with..! I will look forward to discussing with each potential
owner what is potentially best for their circumstances.
However, I do believe it is always clear to an experienced breeder
which pups fall into the following general categories –
- Bolder,
with natural leadership potential
- Middle
of the pack. Confident , but happy to go ‘with
the flow’
- Quieter
(but not shy) – just content to be less
dominant. A follower.
There
are positive aspects to all these personalities, but each one may also
bring different challenges in training and integration into their new
home environment. I believe it is my responsibility to assist new
owners to select a puppy with the personality that will most likely
suit their circumstances. Consistent integration of Dog Listening
principles into one’s lifestyle will do the rest to ensure a
happy, stress-free, calm and responsive companion dog.
NB: Occasionally breeders/dog trainers identify puppies with
personalities at each end of this spectrum ie overly shy/timid, or
overly dominant ‘alpha’ types, but Beath Borders
has never
bred from this temperament or experienced these sorts of puppies.
